COVID-19 Pandemic Blood Supply & Patient Blood Management

COVID-19 Pandemic Blood Supply & Patient Blood Management

Friday April 3, 2020

The American Red Cross and other blood donation organizations are facing a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the blood shortage, emergency life-saving surgeries still must be performed.

In situations where we cannot rely on supply of donor blood, it is vital to implement a Patient Blood Management strategy as recommended by the WHO, SABM, & AABB. One method of blood conservation to consider is the use of perioperative autologous blood salvage.

Blood salvage is the process by which shed blood from the surgical field is collected, filtered, and washed to produce autologous blood for transfusion back to the patient. Additionally, blood salvage can be done postoperatively.

The HEMAsavR is a new device to aid in the collection of shed blood for blood salvage and reduces the need for allogeneic transfusions. HEMAsavR is an easy to implement blood capture & transfer device that seamlessly integrates with existing blood salvage equipment that allows clinicians to respond to unanticipated blood loss.

It is more important than ever to implement Patient Blood Management strategies to conserve blood. Click on these statements from AABB and SABM on the need for Patient Blood Management during the COVID-19 pandemic.
